Sure, Adobe Photoshop is and may always be the king of the image editing jungle, but for those of us who simply can’t afford it or prefer to support smaller developers, Pixelmator is about as good as it gets — and with an update on Thursday, that’s even better than before.
The Pixelmator Team has announced the availability of Pixelmator 2.1, a major update to the developer’s Mac image editing app that now takes full advantage of OS X Mountain Lion and adds new features users will love.
MacBook Pro with Retina Display owners will be happy to hear that Pixelmator 2.1 brings full support for the higher-quality screen on their 15-inch notebook, complete with a Retina-ready user interface and powerful image editing engine optimized for Apple’s latest technology.
iCloud is also a key component of Pixelmator now, with support for Apple’s cloud storage service baked right into the app and able to keep files in sync between multiple Mac systems.
Of course, no update would be complete without some new effects, and Pixelmator 2.1 adds Vintage, Miniaturize, Black and White, Rain and Snow effects with a new Effects Browser to instantly preview and quickly apply special effects or other color adjustments in a snap.
Last but not least, the update introduces alignment guides for quickly positioning, aligning and evenly distributing objects in your Pixelmator compositions with pinpoint accuracy.
Pixelmator 2.1 is available now from the Mac App Store for .99, and is a free update for existing users; Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later is required.
